On Day 13 of the Asian Games 2023, India secured a historic Hockey Gold, and the remarkable performances of Satwik-Chirag took the spotlight, all while India assured itself of over 100 medals.

India clinched an impressive total of nine medals and is on the cusp of achieving a historic milestone with a tally exceeding 100 medals at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. The highlight of the day was the men’s hockey team’s remarkable gold medal victory, marking a significant moment in India’s journey in this multi-sport extravaganza.

India is poised to surpass the previous best of 70 medals achieved at the Jakarta Asian Games earlier this week, firmly establishing a new benchmark at the Asian Games.

In a spectacular display of prowess, Indian women excelled in various sports, including hockey, badminton, archery, bridge, sepaktakraw, and wrestling, contributing significantly to India’s impressive run at the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

To cap off the day on a high note, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty etched their names in history by becoming the first men’s doubles pair to reach the badminton final at the Asian Games.

Following their bronze win at the Tokyo Olympics, India continued their upward trajectory with a sensational performance at the Asian Games in Hangzhou. The men’s hockey team, led by Harmanpreet Singh, dominated the final against 2018 champions Japan, securing a resounding 5-1 victory and the coveted gold medal. Equally significant, this win secured India’s spot in the upcoming Paris Olympics, eliminating the need for a lengthier qualification process. Coach Craig Fulton can take pride in this dominant display. It was India’s fourth gold medal in men’s hockey at the Asian Games, with previous victories in 1966, 1998, and 2014. Four years ago, India secured a bronze in the Jakarta Asian Games.

In a parallel achievement, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty kept the nation’s hopes alive for a historic badminton gold by advancing to the men’s doubles final. Ranked third in the world, the duo displayed exceptional skills, outclassing Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who were Tokyo bronze medalists and former world champions, with a score of 21-17, 21-12 in just 46 minutes. This victory marked the first time an Indian men’s doubles pair guaranteed a silver medal at the Asian Games. Satwik and Chirag, Commonwealth Games gold medalists, will face Korea’s Choi Sol Gyu and Kim Won Ho in the final, holding a 2-0 record against the Korean team.

On the other hand, despite battling a back injury, Prannoy faced defeat in the semifinals, losing 16-21, 9-21 to China’s Li Shi Feng, the reigning All England champion, but still secured a bronze medal.

In archery, India secured a silver medal in the recurve men’s team event after a challenging final against South Korea at the Fuyang Yinhu Sports Centre Final Field. Although India trailed 2-0 after the first set, they made a comeback in the second set, finishing 57-57, ultimately resulting in a 3-1 score.

The Indian women’s recurve archery team, consisting of Ankita Bhakat, Bhajan Kaur, and Simranjeet Kaur, displayed remarkable resilience after a semifinal loss to Korea earlier in the day. They triumphed over Vietnam in the bronze medal match with a score of 6-2, contributing to India’s strong presence in archery, where they have already secured three gold medals.

In cricket, the Indian men’s team secured a spot in the final of the Asian Games 2023 by defeating Bangladesh with a convincing nine-wicket victory at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field in Hangzhou. India bowled brilliantly to restrict Bangladesh to 96 runs, and they comfortably chased down the target with nine wickets in hand, with Tilak Varma scoring fifty.

In a surprising turn of events, Pakistan was stunned by Afghanistan in the second semifinal.

Despite India’s impressive performance in wrestling, star wrestler Bajrang Punia, a Tokyo Olympic medalist, failed to secure a medal. He faced a tough challenge from young Japanese wrestler Kaiki Yamaguchi, who defeated Bajrang by technical superiority in the bronze medal match, preventing him from adding to India’s wrestling medal count at the Asian Games.

The Telangana government will inaugurate the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme today.

The Telangana State government has earmarked a budget of Rs 672 crore for the ambitious Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme, set to roll out this Friday. This initiative will benefit around 2 million students across 27,147 government schools in the state. Under the program, students will receive a nutritious breakfast featuring items like poha, uggani, millet idli, or vegetable pulao.

Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme

The inauguration of the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme will take place at Zilla Parishad High School in Raviryala, Rangareddy district, with the esteemed presence of Health and Finance Minister T Harish Rao and Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy. Simultaneously, MA&UD Minister KT Rama Rao will launch it at the Government Practising Primary School in Lashkar Bazar, Hanamkonda.

The primary objectives of this scheme are to combat classroom hunger and promote regular school attendance among students. To ensure its effective implementation, the program will be closely monitored through a dedicated mobile app. The Telangana government’s substantial allocation of Rs 672 crore underscores its commitment to this initiative, aimed at benefiting over 2.3 million students in Classes 1 to 10 across government schools. Students will be served a piping hot breakfast approximately 45 minutes before the school day begins.

Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy has shared plans to expand the program to other schools following the Dasara holidays. Furthermore, schools will receive improved facilities to enhance the scheme’s success. Monitoring responsibilities have been delegated to municipal commissioners in urban areas and additional district collectors in rural regions. The Education, Panchayat Raj, Women and Child Welfare departments will collaborate to implement the scheme effectively. Rigorous inspections by food inspectors and other officials will guarantee the maintenance of breakfast quality.

It’s noteworthy that while the mid-day meal scheme typically covers students from Classes 1 to 8 nationwide, the Telangana State government has extended this benefit to students in Classes 9 and 10 as well, incurring an additional cost of Rs 137 crore. Copper jaggery, rich in iron and micronutrients, is provided at a cost of Rs 32 crore to ensure that government school students receive a nutritious diet.

The monitoring of the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme follows a hierarchical structure:

  • School-level supervision is overseen by the headmaster.
  • Complex headmasters are responsible for monitoring all schools within their designated school complex.
  • Mandal nodal officers are in charge of monitoring all schools within the mandal.
  • District Educational Officers, in collaboration with the community coordinator of Samagra Shiksha, oversee all schools within the district.
  • The progress of the breakfast scheme is tracked through a mobile app and online software.
  • Implementation of the program is conducted in partnership with the Panchayat Raj, Women Development & Child Welfare departments, with the School Education department serving as the nodal department.
  • In areas covered by municipal corporations, the civic body commissioner serves as the supervisory/nodal officer.
  • At the rural level, the Additional Collector (Local Bodies) assumes overall supervisory responsibility for all schools in the district.
  • Regular quality checks will be conducted through periodic visits by food inspectors.

RBI Maintains Interest Rates at 6.5% and Cautions About Inflation Risks

In a significant decision, the Reserve Bank of India chose to keep its benchmark repo rate steady for the fourth consecutive time, holding it at 6.5% during its latest announcement on Friday. The central bank emphasized its commitment to a policy of “withdrawal of accommodation” as a measure to rein in inflation.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das, commenting on this decision, cautioned that persistent and substantial fluctuations in food prices could lead to a broader and sustained rise in overall inflation. He expressed vigilance regarding the possibility of elevated food prices affecting other sectors and creating stubborn inflationary pressures. Despite a positive outlook for core inflation (which excludes the volatile food and fuel prices), Das referred to the continuing threat of higher food prices due to uncertainties in the kharif or summer sowing and the ongoing global economic slowdown.

Governor Shaktikanta Das underscored that the central theme of the RBI’s monetary policy remained centered around the “withdrawal of accommodation.” This signifies the RBI’s commitment to managing money supply in the economy to control inflation.

Das also noted that vegetable prices had eased in August and were expected to decline further in September, with official figures to be released shortly. Additionally, the RBI projected a real GDP growth rate of 6.5% for India’s economy in the fiscal year 2023-24, with growth estimated at 6.5% for the July-September 2023 period, followed by 6% in October-December 2023 and 5.7% in January-March 2024.

Notably, high cereal prices and the potential impact of El Nino, a global weather pattern, remained key variables that could influence the trajectory of inflation.

It’s worth noting that the central bank had previously raised the repo rate by 250 basis points to 6.5% between May 2022 and February 2023. However, it opted to maintain this rate during its April review of the monetary policy. The repo rate refers to the interest rate at which commercial banks borrow funds from the Reserve Bank by selling their securities, while the reverse repo rate is the rate at which the central bank borrows money. These rates play a crucial role in stimulating credit and investments by businesses, with rate hikes serving to make borrowing more expensive for enterprises, thereby limiting the money supply and cooling inflation—consistent with the primary objective of raising benchmark rates by banks.

SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara and Managing Director Tiwari Receive Term Extensions.

In a move made just one day before the conclusion of his current term, the government has decided to extend the tenure of SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara by an additional 10 months. This extension means that Khara will continue to lead the bank until August 2024. Furthermore, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has also granted a two-year extension to Ashwini Kumar Tiwari, the Managing Director of the bank, whose term was originally set to conclude on January 27.

SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara and Managing Director Tiwari Receive Term Extensions.

The decision to extend Khara’s term stems from the fact that he had not yet reached the age of 63, which is the current retirement age for the SBI Chairman. This extension makes him the second chairman, following Arundhati Bhattacharya, to be granted such an extension.

However, it’s worth noting that while the government has established a retirement age of 63, it doesn’t guarantee that executives will receive an extension. In the past, several other bankers have been asked to step down once their initial terms concluded.

These two extension proposals had been awaiting approval from the government for several weeks, and the decision was made on the very last day. In recent years, figures like O P Bhatt and Bhattacharya had served tenures of four years or more at India’s largest lender.
